Ambulance Service Funding Update
Currently, the ambulance service contract is funded at a total of $900,000 per year. Of this amount, $300,000 is provided by Hidalgo County Emergency Services District #2 (HCESD 2), while the remaining $600,000 is covered by Hidalgo County through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
It is important to note that ARPA funding is scheduled to expire in December 2026. Once these funds are no longer available, Hidalgo County will no longer contribute to ambulance service costs, leaving ESD 2 unable to sustain the current contract independently. This could significantly impact ambulance coverage in the Delta Area.
However, if Proposition 1 passes, the additional funding will enable HCESD 2 to establish and operate a dedicated ambulance service for the Delta Area—eliminating the need for future contracts and ensuring consistent, locally managed emergency medical response.
